me simplify it for you. Whenever you decide to make a card, you cut the card
and fold it symmetrically and prepare an envelope.
But the Cricut card mat does this for you in a
few simple steps with the help of pre-folded cards and envelopes. Thus, it
allows you to create anything on the spot, for instance, a birthday card,
invitation cards for weddings or engagements, Christmas cards, and many more
designs in just one go. The card mat is reusable and needs investment only
once.
How Does a Card Mat Work?
The double-layered mat
works like magic. To use a card mat, you need to insert the pre-folded card
mat. The front side of the mat will be at the top, and a layer will be present
between the top and backside. The middle layer helps cut the top layer of the
card without affecting the back side of the card.
Also, the Cricut Maker card mat has two plastic
protector sheets, which you can use while using the mat. Then, you can reuse it
to protect the mat from dust and dirt.
What Are the Different Types of Cricut Cards Available?
When it comes to using a Cricut card mat, you
should know the different types of Cricut cards you can use to make your
customized cards. Here, we have three types of cards for you.
Cricut insert card: These are the pre-folded cards usually used
to cut designs and make drawings. They are made up of cardstock and have to be
inserted at the back of the design you cut.
Cricut Foil Transfer Insert Cards: Pre-folded
cards are used to create shiny cuts and placed behind the cuts or images.
Cricut Cutaway cards: They are pre-folded
cards with sticky backs.
How to Create Paper Cards with a Cricut Mat?
As you know, the Cricut card mat is used to create customized cards; you can prepare them by using some accessories. Let’s see what you need.

Step 1: Attach Card Mat to Cricut Mat
First, you need to load
the card mat onto your Cricut Strong Grip mat. You should adjust the card mat
one inch away from the left corner and below the Cricut logo. This will place
the card mat at the right location in the Design Space. The Cricut’s insert
card includes a set of 12 folded cards, envelopes, and insert pieces for cards.
The card mat has a sticky plastic pocket to insert the back part of your card. This works as a middle layer and prevents your card’s back part from cutting. So, your next step is to put the card inside.
It’s time to stick your car’s
front part onto the plastic pocket. Then, press it down, as you usually do on
the Cricut mats. Hence, now your card’s back side is protected, and you can
continue cutting on the front part.
Step 2: Search Card Designs in the Design Space App
Once you set up your
insert card onto the mat, find the designs in Design Space. Now, launch a New
Project and click images. After that, tape cartridges and choose from the
displayed card designs. Now, you will see the designs that can be used on all
Cricut machines. But here, we are using it for Cricut maker® 3. Then, select a design and add it to your mat.
Your Design Space will
show all three pieces- Card, insert, and envelope. All of them are not
necessary, and you can cut the card by yourself. Ungroup everything. Then, you
will deal with the pieces individually. Delete the envelope and insert the
piece. Then, delete the score line from the card. Now, tap on the card and then
tap on Contour.
After following all the
steps mentioned, you will have an image like this. This is the final image of
the front side of your card.
Note:
Remember that you cannot use the cards for Cricut Joy on your Cricut Maker.
Step 3: Place the Design on Cricut Card Mat
Before you put the
design into your Cricut machine, you will have to place your design onto the
card mat. When you are done with the design, tap on Make it. Try to locate the
design to get the correct cut on the card. Now, load the mat into the machine
and start cutting your design.
Step 4: Unload the Card from the Card Mat
After you complete your
cut, unload your card from the mat and release it from the plastic pockets.
Now, use a scraper to remove dust and debris stuck to your mat.
Step 5: Finish the Process
To end the process, you
need to paste the insert behind the cut parts. This is how you make a
perfect-looking card in less than 5 minutes. It may take a lot of time
initially, but as you practice, you can make loads of cards quickly.
